Campagne PROCELT1 : prospection des ressources halieutiques benthiques et démersales aux accores du plateau celtique ArchiMer
Latrouite, Daniel; Dorel, Didier; Dupouy, Herve; Quero, Jean-claude.
The « PROCELT 1 » scientific cruise took place from 5 to 28 June 1984 aboard Ifremer's research vessel «Thalassa». Its main objective was to prospect for benthic and demersal biological resources, whether traditionally fished or potential species, on the Celtic shelf-break between 47°30' N and 52°00' N and to assess them whenever possible. 83 hauls were made in stratified random sampling based on bathymetric criteria (between 200 and 800 metres) using a Lofoten trawl with 31.20 metres of headrope and 17.70 metres of footrope. This document reports on the main results of the survey: biological observations and abundance of main species per layer, observations of invertebrates and collecting of material. 26 spec sheets give the biological observations...

Effects of dispersant treated oil upon exploratory behaviour in juvenile European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Aimon, Cassandre; Lebigre, Christophe; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Le Floch, Stephane; Claireaux, Guy.
Accidental spills are pervasive pollution in aquatic ecosystems. Resorting to chemical dispersant is one of the most implemented strategies in response to oil spills, but it results in an increase in the bio-availability of oil compounds known to disturb fish neurosensory capacities and hence fish habitat use. While it has become well established that acute oil exposure can cause a range of physiological defects, sub-lethal consequences on animal behaviour have only received recent attention. Here we investigated the effect of an exposure to a 62 h- dispersant treated oil on the exploration tendency (exploratory activity, and avoidance of unfamiliar open areas) of juvenile European sea bass. Three different concentrations of chemically dispersed oil were...

First insight into personality traits in Northern pike (Esox lucius) larvae: a basis for behavioural studies of early life stages ArchiMer
Pasquet, Alain; Sebastian, Anthony; Begout, Marie-laure; Ledore, Yannick; Teletchea, Fabrice; Fontaine, Pascal.
Personality traits have been studied for some decades in fish species. Yet, most often, studies focused on juveniles or adults. Thus, very few studies tried to demonstrate that traits could also be found in fish larvae. In this study, we aimed at identifying personality traits in Northern pike (Exos lucius) larvae. Twenty first-feeding larvae aged 21 days post hatch (16.1 +/− 0.4 mm in total length, mean +/− SD) were used to establish personality traits with two tests: a maze and a novel object. These tests are generally used for evaluating the activity and exploration of specimens as well as their activity and boldness, respectively. The same Northern pike twenty larvae were challenged in the two tests. Their performances were measured by their activity,...

Fossil Fuel Extraction and Climate Policy: A Review of the Green Paradox with Endogenous Resource Exploration AgEcon
Osterle, Ines.
Policies aimed at reducing emissions from fossil fuels may increase climate damages. This “Green Paradox” emerges if resource owners increase near-term extraction in fear of stricter future policy measures. Hans-Werner Sinn (2008) showed that the paradox occurs when increasing resource taxes are applied within a basic exhaustible resource model. This article highlights that the emergence of the Green Paradox within this framework relies on the non-existence of a backstop technology and fixed fossil fuel resources. In doing this, it initially presents a basic exhaustible resource model which includes a backstop technology and shows that the implementation of a specific sales tax path is effective in mitigating global warming. Secondly, it considers the case...

Identification Signs and Prospects of Hydrate Gas. OceanDocs
Xu, Zhenzhong; Chen, Shiyue; Yang, Shuqing; Ma, Zaitian.
Gas hydrate is a kind of icy crystal body formed by water and natural gas in special conditions. The discovery of gas hydrates provides a wide sphere and a new way of thinking for finding clean and effective energy resources to replace increasingly exhausted traditional energy resources. Moreover, in our country there are a wide realm and bright prospect in the exploration of gas hydrate. This paper has summarized the progress on the study of gas hydrate. And based on the former research about gas hydrates, the integrative identification signs of gas hydrates were summarized in the aspects of seismic data, geophysical well logging, sedimentary and rock, geochemistry, topography and morphology. In the end, the author hopes it may provide some useful clues to...

J.N.S. Allamand’s additions (1769—1781) to the Nouvelle Edition of Buffon’s Histoire Naturelle published in Holland Naturalis
Rookmaaker, L.C..
Jean Nicolas Sébastien Allamand (1713—1787), working in Holland, wrote 41 articles about mammals which were not, or only insufficiently, treated by the Count of Buffon in his Histoire naturelle. Allamand’s contributions first appeared between 1769 and 1781 in various volumes of a French edition of the Histoire naturelle published by J.H. Schneider in Amsterdam. These additional articles are analysed to recognize the sources available to Allamand. The new information was mainly derived from animals seen at fairs in Holland, at the inn Blauw Jan in Amsterdam, in the menagerie and museum of Stadholder Willem V near The Hague, in the museum of the University of Leiden, and from observations made in South Africa by R.J. Gordon.

Long-term dietary-exposure to non-coplanar PCBs induces behavioral disruptions in adult zebrafish and their offspring ArchiMer
Pean, Samuel; Daouk, Tarek; Vignet, Caroline; Lyphout, Laura; Leguay, Didier; Loizeau, Veronique; Begout, Marie-laure; Cousin, Xavier.
The use of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been banned for several decades. PCBs have a long biological half-life and high liposolubility which leads to their bioaccumulation and biomagnification through food chains over a wide range of trophic levels. Exposure can lead to changes in animal physiology and behavior and has been demonstrated in both experimental and field analyses. There are also potential risks to high trophic level predators, including humans. A maternal transfer has been demonstrated in fish as PCBs bind to lipids in eggs. In this study, behavioral traits (exploration and free swimming, with or without challenges) of contaminated zebrafish (Danio rerio) adults and their offspring (both as five-day-old larvae and as two-month-old fish...

On the Uneven Distribution of Innovative Capabilities and Why That Matters for Research, Extension and Development Policies AgEcon
Ekboir, Javier M.; Munoz, Manrrubio; Aguilar, Jorge; Mendel, Roberto Rendon; Muniz, Jose G. Garcia; Cardenas, J. Reyes Altamirano.
Agricultural development policies and programs, including extension and support for innovation, implicitly assume that the whole target population has the ability to innovate. Recent research in neuroscience, education, social sciences and psychology has shown that innovative capabilities are distributed very unevenly. We explored the distribution of innovative capabilities and the ability to integrate a technological package in a sample of commercial lemon producers in Mexico. We have found that the ability to explore new techniques is different from the ability to integrate an efficient production and commercial package. The ability to explore follows an exponential distribution while integration of the package follows a bimodal distribution. The ability...

A giant, 800-m wide pockmark, called Regab, was discovered along the Equatorial African margin at 3160-m water depth and was explored by remote operated vehicle (ROV) as part of the Zaiango (1998-2000) and Biozaire (2001-2003) projects carried out conjointly by TOTAL and a number of French research institutes. A microbathymetric map obtained using the ROV sensors shows that the pockmark actually consists of a cluster of smaller pockmarks aligned N70 along a 15-m deep depression. Methane was recorded all over the pockmark, the highest values along the axis of the depression where massive carbonate crusts and dense seep communities were also found. Several faunal species belong to the Vesicomyidae and Mytilidae bivalve families, as well as to Siboglinidae...

การอนุรักษ์และใช้ประโยชน์ข้าวพันธุ์พื้นเมืองในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ Thai Agricultural
Weerasak Hormsombut; Ronnachai Changsri.
Although traditional rice germplasm in northeastern Thailand is only a small portion comparing to modern popular varieties, they are still grown throughout the region. Those traditional varieties grown in the lower part of the region are mostly non-glutinous varieties, while those grown in the upper part are glutinous ones. The existence of these traditional varieties in the region is not only because of growing for sale, but also due to some special reason, such as, believes in their medicinal and nutritional properties, culture and ancestor’s believes. The main objective of this study is to preserve traditional rice varieties for farmers, with the strategic goal of protecting rice germplasm from losses. The experiments were conducted at Sakon Nakhon Rice...
